Hampton University pulls its money invested in Sudan

(Akiit.com) HAMPTON — Hampton University has completely pulled its investments from Sudan and from companies that do business in the African nation, HU President William Harvey said Monday.

University officials are taking a stand against the genocide in the nation’s Darfur region, Harvey said.

“With the atrocities that the Sudanese government is heaping on its people,” he said in a news release, “Hampton University board of trustees and I felt that we needed to get all of the investments out of companies that do business in Sudan.”

Colleges throughout the nation, including the University of Virginia, have pulled their investments out of Sudan.

HU, a private, historically black institution, began pulling its $200,000 to $250,000 out of Sudan in July 2006 and finished last month.

“Hopefully more people and companies will become knowledgeable about the killings and violence in Sudan,” Harvey said, “and therefore cause more entities to divest.”
